Located at the top of the hill on the grounds of Elvis Presley’s birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi is a beautiful bronze statue called “Becoming.” It was created in 2015 by sculptor Michiel VanderSommen at the request of the Elvis Presley Birthplace Memorial Foundation.

It depicts two figures of Elvis: a young 11-year-old boy dreaming of what the future held for him, and the adult superstar Elvis dressed in the American Eagle jumpsuit and cape that Presley famously wore on his “Aloha from Hawaii” concert special in 1973.

In June 2022, Wynonna Judd called into the Tupelo Elvis Festival and talked about her love for Elvis Presley with host Tom Brown. Wynonna and Tom had recently become friends a few months earlier in March 2022 when Wynonna showed up unannounced at the Nashville Elvis Festival that Brown produces.

Guest contributor, David Hopper of 360°Sound , spoke with Eric Wolfson, author of the new 33 1/3 book on Elvis Presley’s 1969 album From Elvis in Memphis (out now on Bloomsbury Academic). Hot on the heels of the ’68 Comeback Special, Elvis returned to Memphis to record there for the first time since his Sun records in the mid-‘50s. The sessions took place at American Sound Studio under the direction of producer Chips Moman. Backed by the ace house band The Memphis Boys, Elvis cut four Top 20 hits, “In The Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Cry Daddy” and “Kentucky Rain.”
