Elvis Presley book recommendations after seeing the ELVIS movie
Hopefully after seeing the ELVIS movie starring Austin Butler, you want to delve deeper into the true history of Elvis Presley.

*
Here are some lesser-known books I recommend:
1) Book about the Early Days
Elvis Presley: A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-55 Recordings

A 3-CD set of Presley’s Sun Records recordings which includes an amazing 120-page companion book of detailed Elvis history.

The 8″ by 8″ square book includes rare photos of Elvis from age 19 to 20 when he was a relatively unknown singer. It really is an amazing collection.
*
2) Book about Beale Street
Dewey and Elvis: The Life and Times of a Rock ‘n’ Roll Deejay

The unsung hero in the story of Elvis Presley’s rise to fame is Dewey Phillips, the radio DJ who was the first to play “That’s All Right.”
The backstory of Dewey’s popularity in the white and black communities of Memphis plays a huge role in allowing the chips to fall into place for Elvis to break through.
*
3) Book about the Army Years
My latest book,

The ELVIS movie only spent about 3 minutes on Presley’s army years, but a lot happened in those two years!
Find out all the fascinating things Elvis went through during his army years and all the relationships he had – many more than just Priscilla!
*
4) Book about Colonel Parker
The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley.

While many books have been written on Colonel Parker over the years, this is the most recent and most detailed.
While the ELVIS movie was overtly slanted against Colonel Parker, director Baz Luhrmann said in a Q&A that Parker “was a genius.”
This book gives a more balanced history between Elvis and the Colonel. The 2022 updated version includes a new afterword.
*
5) The Story Behind the Story
My first book,

Go behind the scenes of the ELVIS movie to the stories underneath.
The book covers all aspects of Presley’s life – from his childhood stuttering problem to how he unknowingly built his own gravesite. Go beyond the legend, and learn about the man!
*
6) Book about the 1970s
A Little Thing Called Life: From Elvis’s Graceland to Bruce Jenner’s Caitlyn & Songs in Between

This book by Linda Thompson, who was not only Elvis Presley’s girlfriend for 4-1/2 years but also the ex-wife of Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn), recounts some of the most notorious stories about Elvis in her personal memoir.
Hearing these stories told first-hand from the person that was actually there makes a big difference.
*
7) Book about the final months
Elvis and Ginger: Elvis Presley’s fiancée and last love finally tells her story

The last year of Elvis Presley’s life was not as bleak and depressing as the ELVIS movie conveys.
In fact, Presley’s last girlfriend, Ginger Alden, paints a different story of Elvis’ state of mind and physical condition in the final 9 months of his life in her personal memoir.

Just remember, there’s a lot more beneath the surface to Elvis Presley’s history!
